SUPPORTING U.S. AND INTERNATONAL STUDENTS IN FINDING THEIR BEST-FIT COLLEGE AND TELLING THEIR STORY WITH CONFIDENCE
Charting a path to college is one of the most important challenges students and families face. Each year, I work with a select group of students applying to U.S. colleges and universities. These students attend either U.S.-based public and independent schools or English-medium international schools around the world. Our work begins in their junior or senior year and complements the guidance provided by their school’s college counseling teams.
The students I serve reflect extraordinary diversity—American students pursuing education close to home, expatriate students growing up across continents, and host-country nationals seeking global opportunities. This mix of experiences and ambitions enriches every advising relationship and reinforces my belief that each student’s story deserves to be told in their own authentic voice.
With ten years as a head of school overseas and more than thirty years in education—both in the United States and abroad—I bring deep experience in college advising. Every student I have guided has been accepted to one or more U.S. colleges or universities of their choosing.
One of the biggest challenges for international schools is serving families whose aspirations, backgrounds, and educational systems vary widely. At one school I led, the student body represented over seventy nationalities. For families focused on U.S. college destinations, it is common for heads of school to recommend engaging an external advisor to provide personalized guidance—especially for essay coaching and applications to highly selective institutions or scholarship programs.s.
GUIDING STUDENTS AND FAMILIES THROUGH EACH STEP OF THE COLLEGE PLANNING AND APPLICATION JOURNEY
Helping students clarify their educational goals and extracurricular interests.
Exploring potential academic concentrations and major fields of study.
Developing a balanced and personalized list of colleges and universities that reflect each student’s strengths, aspirations, and character.
Preparing students for interviews and campus visits through mock interviews, speaking exercises, and discussion of challenging or sensitive topics.
Considering the possibility of a gap year, and how it might be used for growth or exploration.
Providing individualized essay coaching, including topic selection, structure, and revision—helping students discover and express their authentic voice.
Reviewing portfolio materials for students applying to programs in the visual and performing arts, music, film studies, and architecture.
Advising students interested in intercollegiate athletics by identifying potential colleges and programs that match their academic and athletic profiles.
Every student’s journey is unique, and my role is to help them approach it with confidence, clarity, and purpose.

Testimonials
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside students and families, as well as colleagues across international and U.S. schools. Their reflections speak to the shared purpose that connects all of us—helping others grow in confidence, clarity, and voice.
“Having led schools across the world, TJ brings an insider’s understanding of how selective U.S. colleges evaluate students from international backgrounds. He guided our daughter with patience and precision, helping her articulate not only her achievements but also her character. His feedback was thoughtful, his timelines clear, and his insight invaluable. We always felt that our daughter was in the hands of someone who combined integrity with deep knowledge of the system. TJ’s guidance elevated her application in ways we could never have managed alone. We recommend him without hesitation to any family navigating the American admissions landscape.”

“As an international student, I felt unsure how to present myself to U.S. colleges. TJ helped me understand how to tell my story in a way that was personal and honest. He encouraged me to write in my own voice, not to sound like someone from a brochure. Through his guidance, I felt proud of where I come from and confident about where I am going.”

“Collaborating with TJ reminded me why writing matters. He approached the college essay as both craft and self-discovery, encouraging faculty to see students not as applicants but as authors of their own stories. He brought structure to chaos—bridging the academic and the personal—and modeled how to nurture reflection without taking over a student’s voice. His leadership raised the bar for how writing instruction and college advising can work together.”

“I have rarely encountered someone who blends empathy, intellect, and discipline as naturally as TJ. Students across the campus felt seen and supported; colleagues felt guided and inspired. What distinguished his work was the care he brought to every interaction—student meetings, parent conversations, and faculty discussions alike. His steady leadership shaped a culture where attention to each student’s growth became the school’s defining strength.”
Christian
Head of School, SE Asia
“Our daughter had the grades, but what she lacked was confidence in her own story. TJ changed that. He listened carefully, asked the right questions, and helped her discover the thread that made her experiences meaningful. What began as anxiety about college essays turned into a process of real self-understanding. We saw her excitement return—her belief that she had something worth saying. TJ brought structure and warmth to every step. The college acceptances were wonderful, but what mattered more was that our daughter saw herself differently when it was done.”

“Before working with TJ, I thought college essays were just a task—another box to check. He changed that completely. Every conversation helped me go deeper, to connect my experiences with what really mattered to me. I never felt edited or shaped into someone else’s version of ‘admissible.’ When I finally read my essay aloud, it sounded like me—honest, imperfect, and real. That was the best feeling of all.”

“TJ brings a sense of calm and integrity to everything he does. He doesn’t just prepare students for college; he helps them find their own voice and purpose. In a process that often feels rushed or transactional, TJ restores reflection and meaning. Our family will always be grateful for his presence during such an important chapter in our child’s life.”

“Serving on the faculty of a school under TJ’s leadership, I saw his fascination with storytelling and finding one’s voice become a shared language across campus. At the start of each year, he led the faculty in storytelling exercises designed to help us reflect on our own voices and, in turn, better guide our students. He balanced candor and advocacy with deep respect for each faculty member and every student’s journey.”

Faculty, New York City
“From the very first meeting, TJ brought calm and clarity to what had felt like an overwhelming process. He combined a clear plan with empathy—helping us as parents understand when to step back and when to step in. Our son always felt that TJ respected him, and we did too. He created the space for our child to take ownership of his essays and decisions while keeping the entire process on track. We can’t imagine having gone through it without him; his steady presence turned a stressful season into one of real growth for our family.”
Parents, New Jersey
“Writing has never come easily to me, and at first I didn’t think I had anything interesting to say. TJ helped me realize that my story didn’t have to be dramatic to be meaningful. He listened, asked questions, and somehow found the moments that mattered. By the end, I not only had an essay I was proud of—I had found a way to believe in my own voice.”
William

“TJ didn’t just help me write an essay—he helped me listen to myself. Somewhere between his questions and my answers, I began to hear my own voice clearly for the first time. That voice carried me into college, but more importantly, it has stayed with me ever since.”
Annabelle

“What stood out most about working with TJ was how seriously he took every student. He wanted to understand not just what I’d done, but who I was becoming. His comments were always clear, specific, and kind. He has this way of turning reflection into confidence—of helping you see how the person you are belongs in the future you imagine.”

“Working alongside TJ transformed how I view the college advisory process. As head of school, he had that rare ability to connect deeply with students—you could see it across the campus. In faculty meetings, he consistently guided us to focus our efforts on each student as an individual, not as a profile. Many of our students found confidence and clarity through his leadership, and so did many of us.”
“As an international family, we knew the U.S. college process would be daunting. From our very first meeting, TJ brought clarity, calm, and confidence. He understood both our child’s academic strengths and the cultural nuances that shape how international students present themselves. What impressed us most was his insistence that our son’s essays sound like him—not like what others thought an admissions officer wanted to hear. The result was authentic and deeply moving. TJ’s professionalism and personal attention made all the difference. Our son was admitted to one of his top U.S. choices, and we are forever grateful.”
